beards and work?

i was growing a beard for about two and a half months. i got laid off and had to start looking for other work. i was asking my friends about my beard and work. they said it shouldn't be a problem... i shaved it anyway. I felt like i wouldn't get hired. do you think there is a stigma in the los angeles american working enviroment or do you think i would have been able to get just about any job with out a bias?

  • In my experience, it depends.... I have a lot of physicality in my work so it's not been too much of a problem since I don't have an office.
However, if for any reason I'm required to go by our main office sensitive souls get stressed out and send directives to my boss, who promtly ignores them: THANK YOU!
If you're applying for an office job, it may be the safest move, then introduce it slowly. If you have to interact with the public, you may be stuck.. I'd gven up on a job with that, being one of the reasons I left.
  • Up until 3 months ago, I was a bartender and started growing out my "billy goat" nearly 2 years ago. It wasn't a problem in that invironment. Since I've been laid off, though, it seems to be a hinderance. I've got a gig on a movie in which I have to have the beard, so I can't shave it. And trying to find other work (between work days on P3) has been VERY difficult, even as an "extra" for other movies or tv shows, because it's so extreme.

You'd think LA/Hollywood would be more relaxed than other parts of the country, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I've spent some time in Los Angeles, and I was pretty much floored by the number of folks who overtly displayed their dislike/fear/whatever-it-was about my beard. I didn't see a single gay person with anything more than a "nicely trimmed" moustache.

Anyhoo, it made me feel that I was a foreigner down there. I can especially see where certain types of beards or goats might be _very_ problematic in LA.

In Seattle, it's pretty much a non-issue everywhere. I'm told that Safeway has a nationwide beard taboo.

Kroegers has a no-beard/only-moustaceh policy, unless you work in Alaska.

*grumbles about that 4-month period of "do anything for food-money" employment*
